“Look me now.
Beaty. Strong. Independent. Changing my world for good.
It wasn’t always like that.
Like many girls growing up in South Africa’s townships I was raped by older men I knew and trusted. Three men. One was my uncle. They made me HIV-positive. Afterwards I lived in fear of men. I was ashamed and blamed myself. Killing myself seemed the only escape.
Then I joined MADaboutART. Every day after school I worked on my ‘Hero Book’, the story of how I, Beaty, confronted my ‘shame suicide monster’ and overcame my fear of men.
Now I have two children of my own and I run MAD’s after-school programme for children in the township. Like me, these kids are learning to feel good about themselves, knowing how to stay safe and making a difference for themselves and their community.”
