Feeding hungry mouths

For 15 years the MAD kitchen has cooked up daily offerings for literally thousands of hungry children. More than just a kitchen, it's a refueling station that feeds minds, souls and bodies

Poverty is reality in communities around the world and at MAD many families simply don’t have money to put food on the table to feed their children. MAD provides a safe place to play and learn for many kids in this situation and for many the meal they have at MAD is a lifeline without which they would go to bed hungry. Beaty’s mother Winnie saw children scavenging the local dump for scraps and opened her kitchen to provide a simple cup of soup and some bread; an act of kindness that saved many children from chronic sickness. Winnie began a long-standing tradition which is carried on today at MADaboutART. Like Winnie, we believe in food security rather than dependency and children learn how to plant and harvest seasonal vegetables in our garden which are supplemented with grains, soya and vitamins to create nutritious meals cooked by a team of MADmums. Children and parents working together to help themselves, fulfilling a need, independently and making all the difference for their growing children.

Winnie cooked using a simple wood stove on a dirt floor with whatever food she could get. The kitchen is the heart of MAD and since we built it 15 years ago has cooked up daily offerings for literally thousands of hungry children. Gallons and gallons of soup and thousands of small feet across its floor, it’s now very definitely past its best. We need help, YOUR help, to set in action our 2020 vision to grow more veggies and feed more hungry stomachs. We don’t need an all mod cons state-of-the-art fitted kitchen, just to replace a few somewhat battered benches and cooking stations. This ‘centre of nutrition’ fuelling station feeds minds and souls as well as bodies. It’s more than just a kitchen, it’s a space that fuels the potential of each child.

Our goal is to raise £2,000 to grow more veggies and feed more hungry stomachs. For little more than the cost of a single bespoke kitchen unit in the UK, we will continue to fulfil our promise that no child at MAD goes home hungry. Join with us to make a difference and you’ll receive regular updates and photos of how your gift is banishing hunger and changing the lives of children in a direct and tangible way – THANK YOU
