FIGHTING HIV
REDUCING STIGMA AND HELPING VULNERABLE YOUNGSTERS STAY SAFE
Our vision is a future without HIV created through art and education
HIV affects the lives of millions across the globe, yet many people don't know how to protect themselves or others. Stigma and discrimination are still reality
At MADaboutART children and young people learn the facts around HIV, breaking down stigma and protecting lives
Art is central to our activities; helping children to express emotions, as well as getting everyone learning and talking about HIV.
CONFRONTING GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE
Our ‘Taking back the Power’ project tackles girls’ vulnerability to HIV with knowledge and financial empowerment
In South Africa, teenage girls are at greater risk of HIV than their male counterparts. From early adolescence, cultural and social norms limit opportunity and aspiration for girls
Transactional relationships, inter-generational sex and gender-related abuse propagate inequality and HIV risk, preventing girls and women from reaching their potential. Early sexual debut is often without protection
Making HERO BOOKS (a process of personal story-telling) builds girls’ self-esteem, supports decision-making and reduces vulnerability to HIV
‘TAKING BACK THE POWER’ is linked to MAD’s building brighter futures programme and under-pinned by a belief that economic freedom brings girls and young women greater social and sexual choice . Girls learn to make beaded bracelets and build income by receiving a fee for each bracelet created. Bracelets are sold to visitors to raise funds for MADaboutART’s programme
