NARRATIVE ART
SHARING FEELINGS, CHANGING LIVES
Much of what we do at MADaboutART is about telling stories
Expressing emotions through art provides solace and the pure joy of creativity
Sometimes an individual owns their story. Sometimes it’s a shared story. Often a bit of both
Narrative Art is a powerful way to connect with others. A real-life expression that informs, challenges, perhaps shocks and always leaves us somehow different for having shared it.
ANDILE (at MAD, age 15) had a tough childhood but he never gave up. In fact, he fought harder. At MADaboutART, telling his story helped Andile push forward and become stronger
Love and hope. Andile’s painting ‘Hug’ tells of the need just to be held. Finding support no matter what. Feeling that together anything is possible.

KHAYA (at MAD, age 15) was a shy teenager who found it hard to make friends
His painting 'Tornado and Love' tells of searching for someone who will accept him for who he is. A powerful tornado pushes him forward and he feels positive he'll find happiness and a bright future.

At MADaboutART, children work together to create visual stories that get people talking
Stories that build understanding, create empathy and ultimately change opinion.
Rainbow of Hope works to break down stigma by telling a story of living with HIV, from the dark days of diagnosis and moving, with love and support from those around us, to a future with loving relationships and family.
The gallery at MAD brings art to a place which historically had little except the immediately practical
Knowing their art is seen and appreciated by others, young artists feel good about themselves and their space at MAD
Their powerful artworks show visitors their world as they experience it. Inner thoughts and feelings. Hopes and dreams. Inspirational stories of hope and resilience that forge human connections and leave us different for having shared them.
“It was very emotional seeing the paintings full of personal stories”
